The Ministry of Health has heightened its alert for the introduction of the Zika Virus to Jamaica. The Ministry of Education as a result, is scaling up its response to ensure that all educational institutions take the necessary steps to prevent and/or prepare for the imminent threat of the Zika Virus into the island.

In 2004, principals from our partner schools — Bridgeport Infant School, Marlin Avenue Basic School, Portmore Daycare Centre, Silverstone Basic School and Sabina Basic Schools traveled to Toronto on a study tour. During the tour we began discussions along with members of the Early Childhood Commission and the Ministry of Education and Youth about the creation of a Best Practices document.
Early childhood describes the period in a child’s life between birth and eight years of age. It is the most rapid period of development in human life and a child’s experience during this period has an enormous impact on the health, cognitive development, educational attainment, socialisation and productivity of older children and adults.
The Resource Book has been compiled to assist you, the practitioners and other relevant stakeholders, with your curricular activity plans. It is a supplemental guide that accompanies the Jamaica Early Childhood Curriculum For Children Birth to Five Years Old.
The first written Jamaican pre-school curriculum for children four to six years old was completed in 1973 through the Project for Early Childhood Education (PECE), directed by Mr. D.R.B. Grant and funded by the Bernard van Leer Foundation. The “PECE Curriculum Manual”, as it was called, was a very detailed instructional guide comprising 24 volumes totaling 4,988 pages.
The Jamaica Early Childhood Curriculum, Scope and Sequence for Children: Four to Five Years, is a document outlining developmental objectives for children within the age range. The document will help practitioners at different levels of the early childhood education to see the alignment of instructional planning and children’s development.
Over the past sixty years, advances made by other countries in their provision of early childhood programmes to compensate for deficiencies among children of the poor, have played a significant role in stimulating action-oriented interest in early childhood development in Jamaica.
